As we’ve been over many times, I started Bike Ladies Unite because I couldn’t find any ladies & bikes tumblrs that didn’t post objectifying bullshit. I am happy to say that in the past month, two other blogs have emerged that also reject sexualizing women cyclists! I love seeing their posts and I bet y’all would too. Check out Fixed While Feminist, whose authors are female cyclists of color that celebrate all types of cyclists from a feminist perspective, and Fuck Yeah Girls On Bikes, which features images of awesome lady cyclists and often includes short bios of the riders - this part is super cool and helps us see women as real human beings instead of decoration on a teenager’s fixie. EDIT: I can’t believe I forgot the amazing Bicimamis Caracas, a group of Venezuelan women united by their love of bikes. I really hope we can together break the monopoly of male gaze-focused bike blogs.
Speaking of that sort of thing, it looks like my arch-nemesis Fuck Yeah Girls & Bikes has drastically reduced his posting of awful material. I doubt it’s because he’s had a feminist change of heart, but I guess it’s a good thing. I still get angry when he (and other objectifying tumblrs) reblogs my posts, though. I don’t like seeing my content next to underwear.
So it looks like somebody internet hates me. She even referred to me as her ‘arch-nemesis’ and put the hash tag “fuck you fuck yeah girls and bikes”. Yikes! lol. So, how’s that saying go….if you’re pissing people off, you must be doing something right? Well, if that’s the case, I guess I’m headed in the right direction.
